Motor Yachts (M/Y), also referred as Power Yachts and Motor or Power Boats, are leisure vessels that are not equipped with sails. Because of the fact that Motor Yachts are not powered by the wind through sails, they are in a way more independent than Sailing Yachts regarding weather conditions and offer a greater cruising speed. Motor Yachts have less restrictions in their design (hydrodynamics and aerodynamics), and therefore usually have larger volume bodies in both height and width and are often more equipped, especially in their interior space, than Sailing Yachts. However, Motor Yachts are usually more sensitive to sea conditions such as Roll, pitch and Yaw. Two major categories within the Motor Yachts which do not depend on the length of the Motor Yacht are: Displacement Yachts and Planing Yachts, which indicates the manner in which the boat sails through the water. Navigating, mooring and operating Motor Yachts is considered easier than doing so with sailing yachts. Therefore the Maritime law gives Sailing vessels priority over Motor vessels. In some countries there is even a separation when licensing a skipper.
